Planning the lesson

This lesson involves debating the issues around selling chocolate in schools – and if sold, whether it should be Fairtrade.


(10 minutes)

Using Printout: Debating guidelines, discuss with students the principles and purpose of debating. Are there any other guidelines on behaviour that they would like to include? (back to top)

Main activity

(50 minutes)

Divine ChocolateUsing Printout: The big debate as a starting point, students prepare a subject for debate. There are three main issues to be discussed:

  • Why do we eat chocolate?>
  • Should Fairtrade influence what we buy?
  • Should students be able to buy Fairtrade chocolate at School?

You could pick one issue for class debate or divide the class into three groups and allocate one issue to each group.


Students debate the chosen issue(s).

The session could conclude with a ‘secret ballot’ providing students with statements to agree or disagree with.

Below are some example statements:

  • Fairtrade chocolate should be sold at our school! It will make sure farmers get a fair price for their cocoa and help them to work their way out of poverty.
  • All sorts of chocolate should be sold at our school. We should have all the facts about health and where chocolate comes from to help us make up our own minds.
